The department directory groups together profiles that differ above all in where the meeting takes place. There is the appointment at her own flat inside Minas, at an agreed time, and there is the outcall to wherever someone arriving from out of town is staying. That second option has a particularity here: much of the accommodation in the area is not an urban hotel but a hill cabin, scattered across the countryside and with no clear street number. That is why it is worth reading in each ad the arrangement, the travel radius, the hours and the duration before writing.
Outside Montevideo the offer is practically all independent, and Lavalleja is no exception: there are no agencies and no houses receiving clients, each person runs her own diary. What does change over the course of the year is the make-up of the listing. The Maldonado coast is a little over an hour away by Ruta 12, and in summer a good share of the movement shifts over there, so the season months tend to leave the local list shorter. There are also profiles that come up from Montevideo along Ruta 8 and stay for a few days.
Minas is a working-day city. The quarries that gave it its name, the cement industry and the mineral water plant at the foot of the Cerro del Verdún set the shifts. The strong window runs from late afternoon to midnight, and the long night is concentrated at the weekend. Ruta 8, which carries the freight traffic towards the northeast and the border with Brazil, is almost the only thing that sustains any movement in the small hours. The hours appear on each listing and it pays to confirm them when arranging.
The department is ordered along a single road. Minas concentrates almost all the activity: it is the capital, the one with hotels, a bus terminal and services, and the reference point for the small towns around it, from Solís de Mataojo to the south to Mariscala or Pirarajá to the east. José Pedro Varela sits at the far north, on that same Ruta 8, near the junction with Ruta 14, and gravitates as much towards Minas as towards Treinta y Tres, which is a good deal closer to it. It is a town that grew up around the railway and still works to that logic of a rural hub.
The long formats —an outing of several hours, a whole weekend, company for a stay— have a concrete anchor here in hill tourism. Villa Serrana, the Cerro Arequita, the Salto del Penitente and the cabins in the area work above all in autumn and winter, the other way round from the coast, and fill up during Semana de Turismo and on long weekends. The other peak in the calendar is April 19, when the pilgrimage to the Cerro del Verdún draws thousands of people towards Minas. These are arrangements booked in advance, not at the last minute.
Travel is the heaviest variable in the department. Inside Minas the distances are short and the town center is walkable, so the outcall to a hotel or to a private flat is arranged without much trouble. As soon as you leave the city things change: gravel roads, unlit stretches and accommodation that is explained by landmarks and not by an address. That is why several profiles set a coverage radius and state it in the ad. If the meeting is outside the town center, it is worth passing on the exact spot and a clear landmark in the first message.
Contact is made over WhatsApp, with the number that appears on each profile. In a city like Minas, where a lot of people know one another, discretion counts for more than in the country's capital: the exact address is usually only passed on once the appointment is confirmed. And since the distances in the department are unforgiving, it pays to write before setting out and to settle in that same message the time, the meeting point and what you are looking for. If you are coming along Ruta 8, saying what time you reckon on arriving saves half the back and forth.
The offer is small and it rotates, as in almost the whole interior. The sensible thing is to look at the listing for the entire department before narrowing down by city, because one week with profiles published in Minas can be quite different from the next.
Here the calendar rules more than in other places. Semana de Turismo, April 19 and the long weekends are the moments when diaries are tightest. During the week arranging things is simple and is usually settled the same day.
Each listing details what the person offers, at what hours, with what duration and whether she travels. Reading it in full before writing avoids almost all the usual questions. The site publishes the ads, but the terms are set by each companion and are agreed between the parties.
For anyone arriving from Montevideo, from Maldonado or from the northeast along Ruta 8, Minas is the natural stop: it has accommodation, a bus terminal and almost everything within walking distance. From there, any other point in the department is a road trip away that is worth working out before writing.
