The directory brings together profiles that differ from one another, and the first thing worth looking at is not the photo but how the meeting is arranged. Some companions receive at a place of their own within the city of Rivera, others work mainly with hotels —a hotel stock that exists because of the commercial traffic of the border and not because of tourism— and others travel to the client's accommodation. Each listing states the arrangement, area, time slot and duration. The listings on this page are on the Uruguayan side, even though whoever is consulting them is often standing on the other side of the street.
Outside Montevideo the figure of the agency hardly exists, and Rivera is no exception: the profiles published here manage their own schedule and answer messages themselves. What is particular about the department is the turnover. The capital receives people for work, for business and passing through towards Brazil, and that flow makes the list change from one week to the next. It is worth checking the date of the listing and confirming by message before taking any availability for granted.
Hours are stated in each listing and vary a great deal from one profile to another. The city has a rhythm set by commerce: the centre and the free shop area empty out when the shops close, and night-time activity is concentrated at weekends, when social life is shared between the two halves of the conurbation. That is why the night slot works better here than in most of the interior. In Tranqueras and the small towns the opposite happens: there is a highway in between and little transport after a certain hour, so nights call for advance notice.
The department is organised along two axes. One is the border: the free shops on the Uruguayan side and the shops in Santana do Livramento take turns attracting buyers depending on the exchange rate between the peso and the real, and that back-and-forth decides who travels in which direction. The other is Ruta 5, which comes in from Tacuarembó, passes through Tranqueras and ends at the international boundary itself; all around it forestry rules, with eucalyptus and pine plantations. Towards the north-west the relief breaks up into ridges and ravines, unusual in such a flat country, and Minas de Corrales holds the only gold mining area in Uruguay.
Some profiles offer formats longer than the brief encounter and spell them out in their description: company for a dinner, outings of several hours or dates booked days in advance. In Rivera that kind of request has a concrete explanation: many of the people who arrive are not coming for an afternoon, but staying one or two nights to shop, and they organise their time with room to spare. Since these are not settled on the spot, look for them among the listings that mention them and set out the date, the time and the duration from the very first message.
Travel depends on where you are. The city of Rivera is compact and quick to cross by taxi, so going out to a hotel is common: much of the accommodation is a few blocks from the centre and from the dividing line. Further into the department things change, because reaching Tranqueras, Vichadero or the rural settlements means taking the highway, and several profiles limit their radius or simply prefer to receive. If the meeting is at a hotel, bear in mind that each establishment sets its own rules about visitors.
Contact is made through WhatsApp, directly with the person who posts the listing: there is no reception desk or third party filtering, and what is agreed there is what stands. Have four points settled —where you are, what arrangement you are looking for, at what time and for how long— and the coordination gets shorter. If you are coming from out of town, say so: coordinating with someone staying at a hotel in the centre is not the same as with someone who lives in the neighbourhood. In a city where social life is shared with the one across the way and many people know each other, discretion counts: the exact address is only passed on once the date is confirmed.
The difference between the capital and the rest of the department is not one of quality but of how things work: in the city of Rivera distances are short and coordination is usually settled the same day; in Tranqueras and the small towns the offer is intermittent and calls for booking well ahead.
For anyone arriving from out of town, the area around the centre concentrates the accommodation and is within walking distance of the square that marks the boundary between the two cities. It is the area where a hotel meeting is arranged with the least friction.
Each profile describes where the person receives, at what hours, for what duration and whether they travel. The site publishes the listings; the terms are set by each companion and everything is agreed between the parties before the meeting.
The commercial calendar rules: long weekends and the periods when the exchange rate favours shopping fill the city with visitors, and then schedules fill up further in advance. During the week coordination is simpler. Along Ruta 5 the department connects with Tacuarembó and with the axis that runs down to Montevideo.
